Mohun Bagan 3-1 Aizawl FC Aizawl FC succumbed to a 3-1 defeat in the hands of defending Champions Mohun Bagan A.C. The team from Mizoram, Aizawl FC played the Hero I-League opening match against defending Champions Mohun Bagan at the Barasat Stadium, Kolkata, the teams displayed a very entertaining first half. Manuel Retamero, Aizawl FC’s Head Coach used his tried and tested 4-3-3 formation while Sanjoy Sen fields his men with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Who’s Playing? Poirei stands between the posts in the I-League opening match with new signings Emma and Kima in the middle of the defense line, we see Zuala and Ruatthara again in the right flanks and left flanks. The midfield trio of Yuta, Bta and Msa find their way to the starting eleven after consistent performance in the Season 4 of Mizoram Premier League. Alfred played the centre forward role with Brandon on the left flanks and Albert on the right flanks. First Half The game starts off bright, the first chance of the match came early in the 3rd minute when new signing Glenn’s effort was saved by Aizawl FC’s Poirei from close range. The first goal of the match came in the 5th minute, Glen scored from close range to put his team in the lead, leaving Poirei no time to react. Aizawl FC equalized in the 16th minute after winger Albert raced through from the right, deliver a low pass for Alfred, the forward dummy a shot and released a shot which the out stretching defender Pirtam Kotal pushed into his own net. The Mariners are back in the scoreline, Glenn scored his second goal of the match after receiving a pass from Balwant, the Trinidad forward turned his defender and lashed a powerful shot. At 21mins the scoreline is Mohun Bagan 2-1 Aizawl FC. Balwant registered his first goal of the season after racing past Aizawl FC’s backline and delivered a low shot beyond the reach of Aizawl FC’s Poirei. Second Half The second half turned into an eventful but fruitless affair for Aizawl FC. Aizawl FC played their passing game, working with their short passes and agile footwork. Alfred had the first chance of the second half but failed to capitalize with his header over the woodwork. Aizawl FC have possession and entertained the crowd but the men in white were unable to penetrate the firm backline of Mohun Bagan. In the 78th minute Aizawl FC’s Albert raced past his marker only to hit the side net, a sore miss for Aizawl FC. Liberian forward Alfred had a chance in the 82nd minute but failed to find target, Bagan had a counter attack in the 89th minute but Glenn mistimed his run and was caught barely offside. With both team unable to find target after the 6minutes of added time, the game ends with the Final Score of Mohun Bagan A.C. 3-1 Aizawl FC. The defending champions are off to a bright start while the I-League debutants from the North East still have a lot to prove among the big boys of Indian Football.
