Kingfisher East Bengal blanked their visitors

Aizawl FC played their third away match of the season in the grounds of Barasat Stadium, the home team Kingfisher East Bengal were all over the news following the addition of Bernerd Mendy, a seasoned French player into their barracks. Many fans came to witness the showdown as Aizawl FC had a reputation of playing a pretty neat passing game, which could very well be the way to go for Indian football as the tried and tested long ball play is getting old and bland for the viewers. Bikash Jairu and Bernard Mendy were on target for the home team after the teams played a goalless first half. Aizawl FC did hit the target a few times but were unable to create any shots that Luis Barreto cannot handle.

Formation : 5-3-2

Who’s playing

Poirei stands between the post for a second game, the backline received some change with a five men defensive line, Emma was introduced in the back with the regular backline of Chullova and Kimkima, wing backs Ruatthara on the right and Ricky to the left.

Captain David stands in the middle of the park along with Bta and Yuta.

Valpui and Alfred paired in the front to lead the attack.

The First Half

Head Coach Manuel Fraile used the defensive 5-3-2 formation, the five men defense of Aizawl FC stood firm and resilient to end the first half goalless after East Bengal created some genuinely good chances, luckily Aizawl FC’s goalkeeper Poirei had an impressive game, denying the home team on number of occasions.

The away team kicks off the first half and right from the start the teams were looking for the opening goal with the first chance of the game coming in the 2nd minute, in the minute that followed East Bengals new signing Mendy fired his shot wide off target. In the 7th minute Alfred raced clear past his marker but was caught offside by the linesman.

Mendy had another chance in the 13th minute from a Saumik cross ball but his header went wide.

In the 18th minute Aizawl FC came close to opening the score, Yuta shoots from close range, but his effort lacks power and direction as the shot was straight at the keeper.

Mendy had another chance in the 24th minute after racing clear, Poirei rushed out of his line to keep pressure, denying the Frenchman a chance to shoot.

Poirei is on the limelight once again in the 38th minute as he denied Ranti Martins from close range to keep the score level at 0-0.

Aizawl FC’s Alfred had been a real nuisance as he proved too strong to handle for East Bengal’s defenders, shielding the ball and beating his marker on many occasion, in the 43rd minute the Liberian beat three defenders and delivers a long cross, but his effort was easy ball for Luis Baretto.

The Second Half

The second half saw a change in gameplay tactic for Aizawl FC as the visiting team played a more attacking game, creating some chances in the early minutes of the second half and came really close to scoring in the 49th minute.

Alfred had a powerful shot on target from the edge of the box in the 50th minute but his effort was straight at the keeper, easy enough for L.Baretto to parry.

In the 52nd minute David sends Yuta clear into the box, the Japanese was tackled from behind inside the box, his appeal for penalty was turned down by the referee.

Alfred caused some nuisance once again as he beat the three defenders who were ganging on him, once again he was tackled from behind and brought to the ground. No booking from the refree. Captain David Rinmuana took the freekick, easy catch for the keeper.

Valpuia didn’t stand idle either, the forward delivered a powerful shot to the near post in the 59th minute, Luis Baretto saved his team and kept his cleansheet.

Poirei made another crucial save in the 61st minute from a close range header by Mendy, the goalkeeper stretched to keep the score even.

Four minutes later Ranti Martins had a chance inside the box, his effort hit the post and safely into the hands of the impressive Poirei.

Aizawl FC’s best player of the day Alfred was stretchered out in the 67minute and substituted by Yonezawa in the 70th minute.

The DEADLOCK is broken!!!

72mins GOAL – East Bengal – Jairu scored from a Joaquim cross from the right. Jairu slips between two Aizawl FC defenders to flick the ball home with his head from close range, leaving the goalkeeper no chance to react.

74mins GOAL – East Bengal – Mendy finally got rewarded after creating heaps of chances, Cavin Lobo delivers a cross ball from the left, Mendy stands unmarked, the Frenchman delivered a powerful header which was to strong for the outstretched arms of Poirei.

East Bengals Mendy in action against Aizawl FC Yuta

In the 86th minute Mendy had a chance to score another goal, chested the ball down, Poirei rushed out of his line to deny the forward a clear shot on goal. The score could have been 3-0.

Ranti Martins had a chance to score in the additional minutes after Mendy sends him clear, Emma raced back to intercept the forward, Poirei did a fantastic job 1v1 with Ranti Martins to save his team from the blushes.

The referee blows the final whistle, Aizawl FC had some fine shots on target but their tendency of hitting it straight toward the goalkeeper is not working their way, after a hard fought point in Goa the I-League debutants failed to grab a point for the second time in Kolkata.
