Bengaluru FC 2-3 Aizawl FC

Aizawl FC once again got the better of current Hero I-League Champions and defending Champions of the Hero Federation Cup Bengaluru FC. In their first encounter in the Hero Federation Cup 2016 Aizawl FC outplayed and outscored the I-League Champions with the score of 2-1, the second encounter ended with the full-time score of Bengaluru FC 2-3 Aizawl FC, the aggregate score after the two matches is Aizawl FC 5-3 Bengaluru FC. The team from North-East India playing the Hero I-League for the first time in the clubs history have registered their berth in the Semi-Final of the Hero Federation Cup 2016.

 

Who is Playing?

Poirei, Ricky, Kim Kima, Emma, Ruatthara, Yuta, David, Albert, Rza, Alfred and Joel. Jahar Das made only one change from the team that defeated the I-league champions in the first leg, Rza came in for Brandon.

 

The First Half

Right off the first whistle of the game the home team made their intention clear, Aizawl FC’s backline was under pressure from the 2nd minute of the game, the pressure was mounting but Aizawl FC managed to deal with all the danger that came their way. Bengaluru FC came close to a goal in the 15th minute with a close range header from Johnson but Soram Poirei was right on spot to punch the ball to safety.

Joel Sunday once again scored the first goal of the match in the 26th minute, the Nigerian who scored the winning goal in Aizawl now added to his tally against Bengaluru FC. With 1 away goal Aizawl FC is leading 3-1 on aggregate.

CK Vineeth scored the equaliser 2 minutes after his team concedes a goal, the lanky striker whips his shot from close range, Poirei stood watching.

Aizawl FC have no intentions of playing a defensive game, the away team continued to attack the Bengaluru FC backline looking for more goals, at this point a draw will take Aizawl FC through to the semis, but if they concede and the game ended with the score of Bengaluru FC 2-1 Aizawl FC. The game will have to go to extra time and penalties.

Aizawl FC took the lead in the 37th minute, Alfred feeds Joel who was inside the box, the striker feints his marker with his first touch, sends the ball past Amrinder with his second touch. Oh! what a finish, a prime performance in front of goal.

The referee blows his whistle, the players headed to the tunnel with the half-time score of Bengaluru FC 1-2 Aizawl FC.

 

 

The Second Half

Aizawl FC get the ball rolling in the 2nd half, the away team scored their third and final goal of the night 4 minutes after the restart.

Joel Sunday was brought down in front of goal at the edge of the box after a tackle from Osano. Captain David steps up to take the kick, the skipper floats his effort over the defensive wall and onto the goal, the hapless Amrinder stood watching.

With Aizawl FC leading by 3-1 in the second half, the aggregate score stands at 5-2 in favour of Aizawl FC. The home team now have a daunting task, Bengaluru FC have to score four goals inside forty minutes.

74mins – Penalty – Brandon brought down Udanty inside the penalty box, the dinky winger got booked for his tackle. Sunil Chhetri made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Bengaluru FC gave their very best for a spot in the semi-final of the Hero Federation Cup but Aizawl FC managed to fend of all the dangers, the defenders did their role, Poirei too pulled some fantastic saves in both fixtures. The midfielders helped in defending as well as attacking, the strikers once again showed that they are second to none against the Champion of India’s top flight football league.
