Debutants Aizawl FC sunk the Mariners

In an I-League encounter against the league leaders who are yet to lose a match in the running season our men showed their prime form to hand the visitors their first defeat. Our team win 2-1 against defending champions Mohun Bagan A.C., our Nigerian import Joel Sunday scored the first goal of the match three minutes from the start before Cornell Glen equalised in the 24th minute, Kim Kima scored from the penalty spot in the second half to give the home team a much needed win against the Mariners.

Both teams lose some key players due to injury and inter-national duty, Aizawl FC have to play without Lalramchullova and Emma Chigozie due to suspension while Mk-a is still down with a knee injury, Mohun Bagan too have to make to without Jeje, Sony Norde, Pronay Halder and Pritam Kotal who are on inter-national duty.

 

The First Half

The match got off with a perfect start for the home team, Brandon lays a low cross from outside the box to Joel Sunday, the Nigerian’s deft first touch with his left foot settles the ball, then whips the ball low beyond the reach of the keeper with his right foot.

Aizawl FC’s Zuala who stand in for Chullova had to be stretchered out and replaced by another under 22 player Lalțhakima in the 15th minute.

Katsumi floated in a high ball from the right, after a miscommunication with the defender the ball hit goalkeeper Opa on the chest and ricochets to Ṭhakima who failed to clear the ball, the unmarked Cornell Glen scored from close range. At 24minutes the teams are even at 1-1.

 

Mohun Bagan had their spirits running high after scoring the equaliser, Glen tried to find a way inside the box and was brought down right at the edge of the box, Katsumi took the following free kick but his effort went a few inches wide.

 

Three minutes before the break in normal time, Aizawl FC entertains the crowd with slick passing and beautiful off ball runs, setting up an attack while doing so, Alfred received the final ball and takes the shot only to have his shot over powered and off target.

 

It’s 45+2 minutes, David takes the corner, the ball fell to Kim Kima, the defender lays the ball for Yuta inside the box, the Japanese import sends his shot from close range sailing well over the bar. The referee blows his whistle for the break, it’s Aizawl FC 1-1 Mohun Bagan A.C.

 

The Second Half

The teams are back for the second half and the crowds are roaring for their second 45 minutes of entertaining football, Mohun Bagan made their first substitution of the match, Manish made way for Lewis.

The teams fought for possession of the ball in the middle of the park, it’s a midfield battle until the 54th minute. Penalty kick for Aizawl FC after a handball by Mohun Bagan A.C’s Dhanachandra from a cross by Ruatthara. Kim Kima stepped up for the penalty kick, the veteran defender made no mistake in scoring from the penalty kick, once again Aizawl FC took the lead, it’s Aizawl FC 2-1 Mohun Bagan A.C.

 

Aizawl FC had another chance to score four minutes later, Brandon raced clear on the left, delivers a low cross across the box for Yuta, the Japanese took a finely placed shot to the far post, Debjit pulled off an even better effort to push the ball off for a corner kick.

 

Minutes later Aizawl FC’s fluid attacking play had the Mariners on their toes, David took a shot from the edge of the box, the shot shaved the bar.

Captain David initiated a nice attacking play in the 66th minute, Alfred takes the shot but his effort was deflected for a corner. In the corner that followed, Sunday hits target with his head, Debjit pulled another fine save.

The second half was a display of the ability and calibre of Aizawl FC who had the upper hand of the game and dominated play, in the middle of the pitch Captain David orchestrated the play with his nimble footwork, in the presence of one of India’s very best mid fielder born and raised in Mizoram, the Mariners midfield players are left watching and flabbergasted.

After the added five minutes were played out, the referee blows the final whistle, the Mariners suffered their first defeat of the running season in the hands of debutants Aizawl FC.

Twelve points from twelve matches, we are sitting at the fifth position in the league table.
