Aizawl FC and Sporting Clube de Goa played the second leg of the Hero Federation Cup 2016 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, Goa. In the 1st leg match the teams ended were even at 0-0, a win is always the best result but a good enough result for both teams, Aizawl FC can play the second leg of the Semi-Final going all out for goals as the Goans will need to outscore their opponents to play the Final.

Aizawl FC took the driver’s seat in the 37th minute with a goal from Joel Sunday, the home side upped the ante in search of the equaliser. The Flaming Oranje put the score back on level terms at the edge of the first half. It’s the visitors who took the lead after the restart with a penalty kick by Lalchhawnkima in the 60th minute, the home team once again managed to equalise in the 80th minute with a close range strike from Glan Martins. The Flaming Oranje needed three goals to book their berth in the final but their lack of finesse in front of goal proved costly in the end, Aizawl FC will play the Final of the Hero Federation Cup 2016.

Who is Playing?

Aizawl FC – Poirei, Chullova, Emma, Kim Kima, Ricky, Yuta, David, Mka, Albert, Alfred and Joel.


Sporting Clube de Goa – Arindam, Clemente, Loveday, Bose, Fulganco, Pratesh, Ganesh, Victorino, Amnah, Nicoholas Fernandes, and Sumit Passi.


Jahar Das, Head Coach of Aizawl FC made just one change from the team that fought out a goalless draw in Aizawl, Lalramzauva Khiangte made way for Albert Zohmingmawia.


The First Half


Aizawl FC showed their attacking right off the first whistle, Kim Kima floats in a long ball from the left, Joel managed to have a touch but the defender stood tall, resulting in a corner. The teams counted on their fast wingers on the counters while defending relatively well, its end-to-end stuff as both teams badly needed a goal, Aizawl FC is clearly much more desperate as a goal will force the Flaming Oranje to go all out to outscore the visitors.


Nicholas Fernandez came to scoring for the home team in the 20th minute, his shot to the top corner was pushed over the bar by the alerted Poirei. Alfred K Jaryan too came close to goal in the 25th minute as his shot across the face of goal was just a few inches off target.


GOAL – 37th minute – It’s Joel Sunday again. The Nigerian receives a high ball from the midfield, brings it down to go 1v1 against Arindam with Fulganco trailing behind him, the striker takes his shot early leaving Arindam no chance to react.


Flaming Oranje came close to an equaliser two minutes after conceding a goal, Victorino founds himself with a good chance for the equaliser but his final touch lacked power and direction being under pressure from Emma Chigozie, Soram Poirei dives in the right direction to keep the score at Sporting Clube de Goa 0-1 Aizawl FC.


GOAL – 45+1minute – The home team scored their equaliser right at the edge of the first half, from a corner kick. Pratesh floats the ball high for Loveday who heads the ball back towards goal, the  ball falls to Sumit Passi who stood between two Aizawl FC defenders Kim Kima and Emma, the young striker flicks the ball past Poirei. At the end of the half the scoreboard reads 1-1.


The Second Half


The second half of the match turned into a lively affair, the rejuvenated home team came all guns blazing for their match winning goal, Aizawl FC too defended well and firm giving the home team little open space and managed to create some genuine threat on the counter.


Ten minutes after the restart Aizawl FC made an appeal for penalty after Fulganco Carodozo brought down Albert inside, the referee was unmoved, a lucky escape for the Flaming Oranje.


PENALTY – 59th minute – Captain David Lalrinmuana drives the ball towards goal, passes the ball and continued his run for a one-two pass with Alfred who stood at the edge of the box, the talented midfielder receives the return ball buy was brought down from the back by Pratesh Shirodkar.


Kim Kima steps forward to take the penalty kick, the defender powers his shot to the left corner beyond the outstretched arms of Arindam.


With Aizawl FC taking the lead it’s an uphill battle once again for Sporting Clube de Goa as the home team will have to outscore their visitors to play the Final.


GOAL – 80th minute – Loveday takes a free kick at the edge of the box resulting from a foul on Sumit Passi by Lalruathara. The initial shot got blocked by the wall, the rebound fell to Bose who sends the ball straight at goal, Poirei failed to get a firm grip and parries the ball, Glan Martins was quick to slot it home.


Captain David collects his second Yellow Card of the match in the added minute for his attempt at wasting time.


It’s 90+3 minutes Aizawl FC are now playing a man down, the away team came close to their third goal of the match. Joel Sunday sneaks past the three defenders that surrounded him, founds himself 1v1 with Arindam, the Nigerian have the option to tap the ball to the unmarked Brandon who was right in front of the open goal, the striker decides to go for glory but was denied by the post.


The referee blows the final whistle, aside from the Red card for midfield maestro Captain David Lalrinmuana, its all cheers for Aizawl FC. The team from North East India, playing the Hero I-League and the Hero Federation Cup for the first time have registered their place in the Final of the Hero Federation Cup 2016.
