Aizawl FC 3-2 Shillong Lajong FC


Aizawl FC showed perseverance and came back twice to put the scores even at ninety minutes against a fast and talented Shillong Lajong FC, Aizawl FC took the lead in extra-time and were able to defend their lead till the last whistle of the night.

Shillong Lajong started off on a rather positive note as their first effort on goal was denied by the woodwork 4minutes from the first whistle.

The team from Shillong scored the first goal of the game in the 35th minute from a corner kick which Aizawl FC’s Chullova tapped to his own net.

Aizawl FC equalised three minutes before the break, Ghanaian import Bright Mends was at the right place to end the first half Aizawl FC 1-1 Shillong Lajong FC.

Lajong took the lead 4 minutes after the restart, Aizawl FC conceded from the corner kick for the second time as Joe Zoherliana flicked the ball into the near post.

Aizawl FC’s Albert showed his class and ability by scoring the equaliser and the match winner to take his team to the Final of the Independence Day Tournament 2016.

Aizawl FC’s Coach K. Malsawmkima fielded his regular line up with the exception of Opte-a who started the match for the first time after moving up from the Academy.


The First Half


The match received much hype as a match between two I-League Clubs in the I-Day Football Tournament, the fans of both teams turned up in numbers and the stands are full with fans shouting and cheering for their team.

Shillong Lajong had a better start and put pressure early in the game, the young team had their first attempt on goal a few minutes from the start, their effort hit the woodwork but was flagged for and offside. The visitors continue to push for goal and was able to dictate proceeding at the middle of the park with Joe Zoherliana who had a good game in the middle.

The visitors scored the first goal of the match from a corner kick in the 35th minute, Aizawl FC’s Chullova directed the ball into his own net being under pressure from two Lajong attackers.

Aizawl FC continue to struggle in the middle, Head Coach Mala made a crucial substitution in the 39th minute and substituted attacking midfielder Opte-a for the more pacey B. Thara.

B. Thara receives the ball in his own half, sends the ball to Albert who found space down the right, the winger dribbles past two defender to deliver a powerful crossball, the goalkeeper goes down to save the ball but fumbles, Bright Mends was at the right place to swing the ball home. At the half-time the score line read Aizawl FC 1-1 Shillong Lajong FC.

The Second Half

Shillong Lajong FC was once again in the lead 4 minutes after the restart, the team from Shillong scored from the corner kick for the second time. Shillong Lajong FC’s Joe Zoherliana managed to direct the ball into goal with a neat flick amidst the melee at the near post.

Aizawl FC had to chase the game once again, but on a positive note the Aizawl FC team played with confidence and grit, with the fans continuously cheering for them even when they are a goal down the players know they have everything to win.

Aizawl FC attacked for goal left, right and center, but Lajong defended their goal well and deep. Aizawl FC was clearly the better team and attacked in number, making life very difficult for the Lajong team, till the 85th minute it looked like Lajong would hold their lead till the end.

It’s Albert Time – Rochharzela received the ball at the left flank, floats a high crossball into Lajong FC’s penalty box for Albert who perfectly timed his run, the right winger settles the ball with his right foot and blast the ball past the goalkeeper with his left foot. The scoreline read two-all at the end of ninety minutes.

Albert scored his match winner at extra time with his solo effort as he beats his marker for a space to neatly tuck the ball at the far post beyond the reach of the outstretched goal keeper.

Shillong Lajong FC fought back with all they can but time was not in their favour as the referee blows his whistles after the regulated minutes were played. Aizawl FC won the game with a hard fought 3-2 win, who would’ve known that Aizawl FC would come back twice after conceding to win the game.
